Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Paula Van Goes is a freelance musician who enjoys a career as a chamber musician, soloist and educator. She teaches at Middle Tennessee State University and maintains a private studio.

Van Goes has toured and lectured throughout China, Scotland, Bolivia, Brazil, Ukraine and the United States on saxophone as well as flute and clarinet, and she has become an advocate for Brazilian concert saxophone music. Her dissertation, Brazilian Music for Saxophone: A Survey of Solo and Small Chamber Works, brought her into contact with many of Brazil’s leading classical composers and their students, and has lead to several trips to South America, where she has performed, taught, and collected new compositions.

As a soloist, Van Goes has premiered several works and is dedicated to the promotion of the saxophone as a classical instrument. Recent solo appearances include Suzhou, China, the 2013 Region 7 Conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance, which she co-hosted with Don Aliquo at Middle Tennessee State University, the Navy Band 36th International Saxophone Symposium, the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference and the 2012 World Saxophone Congress XVI in St. Andrew's, Scotland.

An active chamber musician, Van Goes is co-founder of the Greenbrook Ensemble, which is a flute, saxophone and piano trio that was formed in 2007. The Nashville-based ensemble is committed both to finding new compositions for flute and saxophone and to creating our own new music. Recent performance venues include 2013 National Flute Association’s annual conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, “Live in Studio C” on Nashville Public Radio, the American Musicological Society Southern Chapter Annual Conference, Flute Festival Mid-South and Regional conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance. The Greenbrook Ensemble has premiered works by Liduino Pitombeira, Philippe Geiss, Thomas J. Dempster, Jason Emerson, and Ingrid Stölzel. Their self-titled debut CD is available at CD Baby.com.

Van Goes holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland, a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Past academic appointments include Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, and Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Van Goes’ teachers include Dale Underwood, Timothy Timmons, and Robert Fought. Paula is a Selmer-Paris Artist and Clinician and performs exclusively on Selmer-Paris saxophones.
