Scholarships and Grants

Robert Noyce MTeach Scholarship Program ($5,000 per semester for the last 4 semesters)

To apply, students must be currently enrolled at MTSU, pursuing a major in Chemistry, Geoscience, Biology, Physics or Mathematics, with a minor in Secondary Education through the MTeach Program. Students will submit application the semester before their last four semesters. Deadline to apply for fall semester is July 10th and spring semester is November 10th

Applicant Requirements:

  • MTSU student
  • Major in Math, Physics, Chemistry, Geoscience or Biology
  • Overall GPA of 3.0

To complete the scholarship application, a student must:

  • fill out the application in its entirety,
  • include a copy of an unofficial transcript showing all college coursework completed to date,
  • submit a copy of your DegreeWorks,
  • submit the required essay, and
  • request that two letters of recommendation by faculty members be sent directly to Dr. Amy Phelps (amy.phelps@mtsu.edu)

Tennessee Minority Teaching Fellows Program ($5,000)

The Minority Teaching Fellows seeks to recruit minority candidates to teaching.

To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • Be a minority Tennessee resident and a U.S. Citizen
  • Be a high school senior who achieves at least a 2.75 high school cumulative grade point average and scores a minimum composite score of 18 on the ACT or 860 SAT (math and critical reading only) OR
  • Be a continuing college student who achieves at least a 2.5 college cumulative grade point average
  • Be enrolled full-time

An application, in order to be considered complete, must be accompanied by:

  • Complete an online application located on the TSAC Student Financial Aid Portal
  • Submit a 250 word essay detailing “Why I Chose Teaching as a Profession,” and
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a school official and a letter of recommendation from a community member, and Submit a list detailing involvement in extracurricular activities

Students selected for the program are required to sign a promissory note and in doing so incur an obligation to teach PreK-12 in a Tennessee public school one year for each year the award is received. Recipients must be employed as a full-time teacher to fulfill the service obligation associated with the program. Recipients, who do not meet this obligation, must repay the award to the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) at 9% interest which begins accruing from the date of withdrawal from the teacher education program or September 1 following graduation. TSAC must receive the completed application and required attachments by April 15th

Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program ($5,000)

The Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program participation is limited to college juniors, seniors, and post baccalaureate candidates admitted to a teacher education program in a Tennessee college or university.

To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • be a Tennessee resident and a U.S. citizen, and
  • have at least a 2.75 GPA or higher if required for the teacher education program at their school of choice, and
  • be enrolled full-time if undergraduate or at least half-time if a graduate student, and
  • not be a licensed teacher, and not be employed or previously employed in a teaching position.

An application, in order to be considered complete, must be accompanied by:

  • a letter of recommendation from an official of a state-approved teacher education program
  • official copies of all college or university transcripts and documentation verifying the standardized test scores used for admission to the teacher education program.

Those who accept the award must sign a promissory note and in doing so incur an obligation to teach at a PreK-12 in a Tennessee public school one year for each year an award is received. Recipients must be employed as a full-time teacher to be considered for forgiveness. If recipients do not meet this obligation, the award must be repaid to TSAC. The award may be renewed three times for a total of four years. The recipient must maintain at least a 2.75 grade point average to remain eligible. Applicants seeking initial licensure are considered. TSAC must receive the completed application and required attachments by April 15.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant ($4,000 per year)

The TEACH grant provides up to $4,000 per year to students who agree to teach for four years at an elementary, secondary, or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families within eight years of completion. This application has a rolling deadline.

To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • complete a FAFSA,
  • be enrolled at least half time as an undergrad or graduate in an eligible degree program,
  • maintain a 3.25 GPA,
  • visit the basic criteria page for more detailed requirement information.
  • TEACH grant application can be found on the Financial Aid website

Federal Loan Forgiveness Program

The Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program is intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue in the teaching profession. Under this program, if you teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in certain elementary and secondary schools and educational service agencies that serve low-income families, and meet other qualifications, you may be eligible for forgiveness of up to a combined total of $17,500 on your Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and your Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans. If you have PLUS loans only, you are not eligible for this type of forgiveness.
