I. Purpose

Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU or University) seeks to reasonably assure each member of the campus community, including employees, students, and guests, a safe and healthful campus environment. Recognizing that there is a potential hazard to hearing impaired persons occupying private offices, it is the intent of the University to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended (ADAAA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and, where applicable, provide accessible warning systems for these individuals.

II. Implementation of Policy

A.  Facilities Services is responsible for providing life safety systems in accordance with current code requirements.

B.  Facilities Services is responsible for providing fire alarm system strobe lights (or other notification equipment as may be approved by code) in all private offices and any other work area occupied by hearing impaired department personnel when such an accommodation is requested through procedures established by the Director of ADA Compliance in the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance at the request of the affected employee.

C.  Elements to be considered are audible warning devices (horns and speakers) and visual warning devices (strobe lights or other notification equipment as may be  approved by code).

D.  Upon approval of a requested accommodation by the Director of ADA Compliance in the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance, such installations are requested through Facilities Services as a Special Project funded by the University. The department or division where the employee is located may be responsible for the costs.
