Dr. Wandi Ding

How did you become interested in the math or science field while at high school?
I had an excellent math teacher in high school, her talent and encouragement lead my way to math. Also my father was a middle school math teacher and he explained some interesting math concepts to me from time to time.
Why did you choose to work in your field?
From 1), I didn't think much when I chose careers. It is like by default.
What are some areas of your job that you like the most?
Both teaching and research, when some students finally figure out something with my help, I am so satisfied and thankful. Also if I have some new idea and get some nice results, I will be happy for quite a while.
What one thing would you tell a middle or high school girl who is considering majoring in STEM in college?
Girls are as smart as boys and maybe more patient and careful. Go for it.
Wandi Ding joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Middle Tennessee State University as Assistant Professor in August 2007. Dr. Ding received her Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics in 2006 from The University of Tennessee - Knoxville (UTK), performing her research on optimal control of Ordinary Differential Equations/Partial Differential Equations with applications to biology/ecology. She received her M.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from Ocean University of China in 2001, and her B.S. degree in Mathematics Education from Normal College of Qingdao University, China, in 1998.
Dr. Ding has been working with Drs. Suzanne Lenhart and Louis Gross on optimal control of spatial ecology and natural resource management. See the Grid Computing Project for Ecological Modeling and Spatial Control. Dr. Ding is a member of SIAM, AMS, MAA, SMB, AWM, Phi Kappa Phi and RMA.
