History
The Reserve Officers' Training Corps at MTSU has a proud history dating to the program's
establishment in 1950. Since then, over 1,500 Army cadets have gone on to successful
Army careers, and our program to date has produced 16 general officers.
The Department of Military Science offers courses, which are applicable to all branches of the United States Army and through which a student can earn an academic minor. These courses give students a broad knowledge of Army leadership, management, and technical skills thereby preparing them for an Army commission and subsequent entrance to an officer's basic branch course at one of the Army service schools. The objectives of producing officers through the ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) program are to:
- provide officers a broad educational base
- provide a basic military education for students
- teach basic fundamentals and techniques of leadership and management
- develop, in conjunction with other academic disciplines, individual
- character and attributes required of an officer in the U.S. Army
The facilities available to Army ROTC Cadets at MTSU include an on-campus Engagement Skills Trainer (EST); a thirty foot rappelling tower; and a modern recreation center for physical training.
MTSU Cadets are very active students on campus and the ROTC experience complements
campus life. They are members of fraternities and sororities and participate in intercollegiate
sports such as football and baseball. The ROTC department supports very successful
intramural teams and has several organizations open to all students on campus. One
such organization is the Blue Brigade Drill Team. They perform at home football and
basketball games, march in local parades and have provided color guards for the Tennessee
Titans and Nashville Predators hockey team. The MTSU Ranger Challenge team consistently
places in the top 5 at the annual Ranger Challenge held at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
