Reception for new collections featuring work from a full-range of artists from across Middle Tennessee.
12 | Cubed is a juried exhibition composed of works that do not exceed 12” in any
direction. The competition, which originated in 2005, appeals to many artists all
across the United States, and has attracted some of the best contemporary art being
produced. This year’s competition was juried by former Middle Tennessee State University
professor Charles Clary, now Assistant Professor and Foundations Coordinator for Visual
Arts at Coastal Carolina University. Previous renditions of the exhibits were juried
by such notables as national art critic Dave Hickey and the Frist Center’s Mark Scalia.
This edition promises 20 works with something big in small scale for everyone. This
year’s winner is St. Louis, Missouri’s Justin Penov. A work of mixed media, it is
entitled “The Dead Room,” Runner up is Joe Krawczyk, a graphic designer from Orlando,
Florida with his piece “Deck Chair” which had previously been featured in the Park
Gables Gallery in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Color, Content, and Character: Academic and Self-Taught Perspectives in Art is an
exhibit displaying the works of self-taught artists from the middle Tennessee area.
A notable artist Willard Hill from Manchester, TN. Hill’s work is mostly made using
masking tape and other mixed media to display life in his rural community. Hill received
his first solo exhibition at the age of 82, and has since been featured in The Good
Luck Gallery in Paris and New York. His role as an African American artist was highlighted
with his inclusion in Reclamation! Pan-African Works from the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection,
The Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke, VA. A number of Hill’s works are included in the
exhibition. Color, Content, and Character is additionally supported by 16 other artists
James Langston, Susan Rodehaver, Samira Hardcastle, Theresa Sifford, Jan Quarles,
Justyna Kostkowska, Phyllis Razo, Carol Berning, Carmen Bouldin, Heather McCormick,
Leroy Hodges, Diane Stockard, Kay Currie, Mary Watkins, Taryn Simpson, and Mark Jackson.
All Todd Art Gallery exhibits and receptions are free and open to the public. Collections
will be available for viewing September 22nd through October 20th.
Letterpress - Pull a Print Event!

Collage Techniques Workshop, led by Erin Anfinson and Hollie Chastain.
In this workshop we'll be using a pattern making method to create simple designs,
with a large assortment of paper to choose from, on a wooden panel that you can then
take home with you. We'll learn about different paper textures, an assortment of adhesives
and how they all work together and we will be answering any and all of your paper
art questions. Drop by if you're new to collage or you're already familiar and want
to experiment with some new techniques! All welcome and open to the public.
Figure Drawing Basics with a Concentration on Gesture & Contour

Watercolor Basics: "Capturing the Moment"

Watercolor painting workshop, led by Sisavanh Houghton.
In this workshop, Sisavanh Houghton will demonstrate basic watercolor techniques,
discuss elemental and principals of design and the benefits of using a photographic
reference as inspiration. Participants should bring in some photographs to work from,
watercolor paper, brushes, and a simple watercolor set. This class is to inspire
and guide participants in their own style of working such as: abstraction, realism,
minimalism, and cubism. Practical advice for traveling with paints and working in
Alla-Prima will be discussed as well. Open to the public. Limited spaces available.
Opening Reception for Nick Peña's 'Sectional Views: One Nation Under...'

Nick Peña is a visual artist living and working in Memphis, TN. He got his BFA from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, studied abroad at the Hospitalfield House in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland and received hi MFA at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Currently Peña is an associate professor of art in the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN. Peña has had six solo exhibitions in the last five years, and has been included in twenty National and Juried exhibitions since 2007, with his twenty-first taking place in January of 2019. On display in the Todd Art Gallery will be sixteen works from his seriesCrosscut and The Way of The World, as well as several miscellaneous pieces not yet displayed on his website.

We hope to gather more than 100 people to wear a series of 100 letterpress printed
t-shirts printed in commemoration of President Barack Obama's 100th day in office.
Each t-shirt contains roughly 25 words of President Obama's 2,383-word Inauguration
speech. All attendees are encouraged to carry posters (provided) featuring the words
of Martin Luther King, Jr. The March is free and open to the public of all ages. *Sign-up
not required to participate in the March.

Acrylic Pour Workshop

Workshop led by local visiting artist Diane Stockard.
Diane Stockard is a nationally and internationally known artist and has won several
National and International Awards. She is known for her colors and her music art.
She has been called the Artist of Glow, because her paintings seem to glow off the
canvas or wood.
Join us Saturday, February 16th, 2019 at Todd Hall, Room 236 at Middle Tennessee State
University from 1:00pm - 3:00pm and learn how to create your own acrylic pour artwork
on canvas or wood! Learn different pour techniques, how to finish a piece, and other
tips to make successful artworks. An apron or paint clothes are highly recommended
as acrylic paint is permanent when it gets on clothing; otherwise, all supplies are

Acrylic artist Carmen Boudin leads this class in acrylic painting and mixing techniques.
Open to the Public. Limit 15 participants. All supplies will be provided.
A native of Memphis, TN, Carmen specializes in acrylic painting with themes that include landscapes, animals, and literary connections. Each participant will be provided a framed canvas, acrylic paints, and brushes. It is suggested that the workshop attendee wear clothes that is acceptable to acrylic spills and provide small images of potential subject matter.
'Understanding Animal Anatomy for Creature Design', an Illustration Workshop

When an artist understands basic animal anatomy and construction, any fictional creature
can be imagined and designed. In this workshop, students first will be introduced
to the fundamental principles of animal anatomy. They’ll then be given a scenario
in which a fictitious animal was involved in a mysterious incident. Students will
be challenged to design the creature described in the account. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sketchbook and any drawing tools of their choice.

Printed Textiles, a Printmaking Workshop

Workshop led by local visiting artist Sierra Dohanos with assistance by Nick Satinover.
Participants will learn how to create a monotype using plexiglass on a fabric printing
table to work on a collaborative printed textile piece. Participants will also be
silkscreening onto fabric using specific textile pigments. Workshop is free and open
to the public; all supplies are provided by MTSU. Workshop is limited to 12 participants.
Sierra Dohanos is a MTSU alumni and has been a studio assistant for the Printed Textile workshop at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
The Principles of Design with the Tortoise and the Hare

Workshop led by Jean Nagy and Sheri Selph, Graphic Design Professors at MTSU.
Join Associate Professor Jean Nagy and Assistant Professor Sheri Selph for a workshop
in book design and layout while visually re-interpreting Aesop's classic tale, The
Tortoise and the Hare. You can participate in this fun, collaborative, mixed-media
project while learning the guiding principles of design. This wholesome, teaching
tale is appropriate for the whole family. And the book collaborations will be exhibited
in Andrew Todd Hall's Glass Gallery after. We will be providing mixed papers and media. (No oils or chemicals.) Participants
are invited to bring one natural item to incorporate into the story, if they wish. Ages
5 - 105 welcome! We would love for children and adults to attend. (Minors must have an adult stay with
them.) We encourage parents to participate with their children. Workshop is limited
to 20 participants.
Experimental Sand-Casting: Creating Cast Aluminum Sculpture

Workshop led by Michael Baggarly, sculpture professor at MTSU Dept. of Art and Design.
Come out and have a great time experiencing metal casting as an investigative platform
for making art. Attendees will be exploring Experimental Petro-Bond Sand Casting incorporating
found and altered materials to create low-relief assemblages that will be utilized
to create cast aluminum forms. Each person will have the opportunity to watch the
finished molds be cast and to participate in the finishing of their own aluminum sculpture
to take home at the end of the workshop. No prior casting experience is required and
the event is a safe, open, and free experience for all ages. Space is limited to twelve
spots. RSVP is required for attendance.

Nature and Realism, An Acrylic Painting Workshop

Join us for an acrylic painting workshop with a focus on realism and painting scenes
in nature. Learn techniques to keep your acrylics from drying too quickly as well
as techniques in painting realistically and capturing wildlife and nature landscapes
with paint. Participants are encouraged to wear painting clothes or an apron as acrylics
are permanent when on clothing. Participants may also bring their own images of landscapes

Exploring the Colors, Shapes, and Harmony of Cubism with Fabric Art

Workshop led by local artists Leroy and Barbara Hodges.
The workshop will provide participants with 100% hands-on experience in creating a
2-dimensional piece of artwork using fabric art and cubism. Participants will explore
the Colors, Shapes, and Harmony of Cubism fused with Fabric Art. Leroy Hodges utilizes
Cubism in much of his artwork. Barbara is a mixed media artist who focused on Fabric
Art. Participant will use these 2 creative art forms to create a beautiful, colorful,
unique 2-D mixed media artwork. Open to the public, limited to 20 participants, all
supplies provided. All ages welcome!
Guided Tour + Q&A of "Neither East Nor West", a Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibit

Guided Tour + Q&A led by Professor Qian Li.
China has undergone a huge industrial and cultural shift in the past 100 years. In
the midst of the era of globalization, individuals from different backgrounds and
cultures share their experiences, lives, food, art, and music. What was known as "East"
and "West" has blurred. Exchanging cultural practices, concepts, and ways of living
is common. Come view the blurring of these cultural lines manifest in the works of these award-winning
Chinese contemporary artists. The exhibit reception will feature cello performances by Dr. Christine Kim, and pipa
performances by new visiting scholar Jun Tian. Join us for midday snacks while we
bask in the artistry of Chinese artists and musicians!

Color Exploration with Tie Dye
Saturday, September 21st, 2019 | 12:30 PM & 1:30 | Todd Hall, Room 236
Workshop led by Kim Dummons and Nicole Foran.
In this double workshop, participants will explore color theory through the application of
different colors of dye onto fabric. The department of Art and Design is offering
two (2) separate 45-minute sessions of this workshop. The first session will begin
at 12:30 PM and the second session will begin at 1:30 PM. One free white cotton t-shirt
will be provided per participant; however, if participants want to tie dye multiple
shirts or have a specific sizes in mind, they should bring their own 100% Cotton T-Shirt.
Included T-Shirt sizes range from S, M, L, XL, and a limited supply of 2XL. All other
supplies included. Participants should wear appropriate clothing or other clothing
protection, such as an apron, as dye may splatter onto clothing. The first session
is limited to 12 participants; the second session is limited to 20 participants. RSVP
required for attendance.
"Story Me This: Narrative Quilting", a Collaborative Multimedia Storytelling Experience with Susan Sharpe

In conjunction with an exhibition of narrative quilting from September 21 to October
12, we will be offering a lecture on the art of storytelling conducted by nationally
known quilt-artist and art educator Susan Sharpe. The lecture will focus on her different experiences & materials to how her work has evolved into a narrative style
that exploits a wide range of fiber & fabric processes. The lecture aims to engage
participants specifically in developing narrative content for their own visual and
verbal works. A discussion of the Space Colonization and Exploration of Mars and a Star Viewing Party
at the MTSU Planetarium (weather permitting) with Dr. Higgins, a MTSU Department of
Physics and Astronomy professor, will follow.

Workshop led by visiting artist Susan Sharpe.
This four to six hour (4-6 hr.) workshop will be an exercise in unleashing the imagination through a narrative that
the participants will work together to produce a mixed media mural for display in
the main hallway of the Todd building. Participants will be introduced to a variety
of techniques and media, including the making of their own relief blocks, acrylic
painting, and textile appliqué. Open to the public, public and private art teachers,
as well as MTSU students, faculty, staff, and their children. All materials will be
supplied. Registered participants will receive lunch. Professional Development points
are available for teachers to earn by attending; certificate will be prepared and
handed out for those teachers that note it on signup. RSVP required for attendance.

Animal Sculpting with Visiting Artist Kay Currie
Saturday, October 19th, 2019 | 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM | Todd Hall, Room 113
Workshop led by visiting artist Kay Currie.
In this workshop, visiting artist Kay Currie will be demonstrating how to sculpt an
animal by carving a three dimensional form from a solid block of clay. Once carved,
it will be cut into pieces and hollowed out and put back together and any additional
pieces to the sculpture will be added. Participants should think of a domestic animal
that they wish to sculpt and bring reference photos as needed. Participants should
wear clothing they don't mind getting dirty or bring clothing protection such as an
apron. No food or drinks allowed inside the clay room. All tools and supplies will
be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own clay tools if they
wish. This workshop is open to the public, ages 12 and older. Limited to 8 participants.

This workshop will serve as an introduction to encaustic painting, including studio

techniques for image making, including; brush application and fusing, translucent
glazing, incising, scraping, and accretion (texture building.) This workshop is appropriate
for beginners, as well as artists who want to experiment with new techniques. All
materials and supplies will be provided. Workshop suitable for beginners through intermediate

the generic face! Participants will learn tips and tricks on how to draw the face
using correct proportions. Participants may bring their own sketchbooks, pencils,
and eraser if desired; all supplies will be provided for those that do not. This workshop
