CUSTOMS Orientation with the COE

Welcome to the College of Education! We look forward to working with you as you begin your journey to becoming a teacher. The information and details below provide step-by-step instructions and resources for new student orientation (CUSTOMS). Thanks for choosing to become a teacher and being True Blue!

STEP 1.

New students will first register for an upcoming CUSTOMS event. Our incoming transfers and freshmen can elect to attend an in-person session. These are day-long events that will involve multiple aspects of campus orientation in addition to advising. Virtual sessions are also available and will only include advising activities. New students who elect not to attend CUSTOMS will need to schedule an individual advising appointment and will not be permitted to register until after the final CUSTOMS session of the term. STEP 2.

After signing up for a session, complete all of the Online CUSTOMS modules This is a new student requirement for all majors. When you have finished the program, you will receive an electronic Certificate of Completion to email to your advisor as verification of this step.

STEP 3.

A COE advisor will reach out to you via MTmail with a pre-advising survey that will help to create accurate documentation that fits your needs. Make sure your MTmail account is set up and check it often. If you need assistance in doing this please contact the ITD Help Desk. Advising will begin via email in the days leading up to your CUSTOMS session so that you have time to review your advising folder beforehand. Students attending in-person will receive a physical binder with copies. All others can request a physical copy at a later point. 

STEP 4.

Follow along MTSU’s helpful new student checklists to make sure you are prepared for CUSTOMS Day. Being proactive will ensure you can register on time without any restrictions. AFTER CUSTOMS.

DID YOU MISS CUSTOMS?

For new admits who were unable to attend CUSTOMS, you must meet with an advisor before being permitted to register. Please follow these steps for orientation and advising. You will need to set up your MT accounts like MTmail and Pipeline first.

Schedule Individual Advising To Receive a Registration Time

  1. Watch this helpful video on How To Register. 
  2. Send an email to the appropriate advisor requesting an orientation advising appointment. They will follow up with appointment scheduling instructions and a Pre-Advising survey for you to complete right away.
  3. You will meet with an advisor either remotely or in-person to go through your advising documentation and registration questions. You will be given an assigned registration time immediately following that appointment so that you can register on your own for the upcoming semseter.

Make Sure You're Eligible to Register

  1. Complete all of the Online CUSTOMS modules prior to your advising and registration.
  2. Check Pipeline for any missing Admissions requirements:
    1. In your Admissions Application, select “check admission status” to view outstanding requirements. 
    2. Under the “Registration and Student Records” tab, click the “holds” page to see if you have any outstanding holds that may prevent registration.
    3. Submit any required vaccination records to Health Services using the Student Portal. 
  3. Set up your financial aid at the MT OneStop.
