MTSU’s Tennessee Teach Back Initiative (TTBI)

The Tennessee Teach Back Initiative (TTBI) is designed to recruit, support, and retain high-quality educators in the state who are committed to making a lasting impact in the lives of students, families, and communities. TTBI ensures graduates are well-equipped for the classroom by providing aspiring teachers with the resources, mentorship, and preparation needed to succeed. By fostering a strong network of passionate and dedicated teachers, TTBI strengthens the state’s education system and expands opportunities for students across the state of Tennessee.

Objectives:

  • Prepare and support well-qualified educators to serve in high-need areas throughout Tennessee. By 2032, the state will need 42,600 teachers to meet growing demands.
  • Ensure K – 12 learners have access to well-prepared and effective teachers by placing educators in districts with critical shortages or reliance on emergency permits.
  • Provide students with last-dollar financial support, alleviating financial obstacles and supporting their path into the teaching profession [i.e., makes teaching a more accessible career choice].
  • Ensure students receive the necessary training, mentorship, and experience to be well-prepared for success in the classroom.
  • Provide structured support and incentives that promote career longevity, thus contributing to an increase in teacher retention.
  • Strengthen partnerships with K – 12 districts, local governments, and community organizations.
  • Foster community engagement by encouraging teachers to serve in the districts where they received support. This sustainable approach helps build a stronger educational ecosystem.
