Biography
Benjamin Sawyer is a historian whose research examines the history of economic systems with a geographic focus on Russia and the United States. He is particularly interested in the ways that capitalism and communism take on social meanings that transcend core economic principles. Read More »Benjamin Sawyer is a historian whose research examines the history of economic systems with a geographic focus on Russia and the United States. He is particularly interested in the ways that capitalism and communism take on social meanings that transcend core economic principles. He is currently working on a book manuscript that examines the ways that Americans in the early to mid 20th century came to invest Soviet space with many of the same values as those attributed to the American West.
Ben is also the host of The Road to Now, a history and politics show that airs weekly on SiriusXM POTUS Channel 124 and is available on all major podcast players, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, & Stitcher. Ben created the show with fellow host and friend Bob Crawford of the band The Avett Brothers in 2016, and together they have interviewed some incredible guests, including Annette Gordon-Reed, Heather Cox Richardson, and Ken Burns, the latter of which selected The Road to Now as his top podcast moment of 2021. Dr. Sawyer is committed to public outreach, and has appeared in multiple media sources including The Washington Post, Forbes, Roll Call, Sirius/XM Politics, and Out of The Blue.
Dr. Sawyer is also an experienced public speaker who has represented the university to prospective students as Faculty Welcome Speaker at MTSU's Preview Day recruitment event on four occasions and to alumni at the 2019 Alumni Summer College. He is proudly featured in MTSU's 2019 "True Blue Pledge," which is featured at many university events and on television. Outside the university, Dr. Sawyer has spoken to a wide variety of audiences, and was an invited speaker at the National Conference of State Legislatures' Legislative Summit in 2019, 2021, & 2022, where he spoke to an audience of lawmakers from all 50 states and around the globe on the power of story.
