Ms. Weir’s content area focuses on family relations, advocacy, and positive aging allowing her to prepare students to support families and individuals at all stages of life.
Prior to joining the CDFS faculty, Ms. Weir spent nine years working in the field of child sexual abuse, specifically in the area of prevention and intervention. During this time she trained thousands of children and adults on the prevention of child abuse as well as worked as a forensic interviewer in collaboration with local district attorneys to prosecute hundreds of offenders.
Ms. Weir has spent her career working as an advocate for families and individuals throughout the lifespan. She strives to remove stereotypes around aging as well as to promote positive aging in the community. Ms. Weir works to encourage students to explore careers in gerontology through an intergenerational program, Aging Health and Development, a class in the Human Sciences Department, where students work with residents at a local assisted living facility to implement activities that add enrichment into their daily lives. Through this program, Ms. Weir has seen firsthand the amazing impact that interaction with the elderly can have on the elder, as well as the students. It is a privilege to be a part of a program where stereotypes end while students find their spark for a career to begin.
Ms. Weir is an active member of the Rutherford County Coalition Against Child Abuse and MTSU’s Positive Aging Consortium.
