Biography

Dr. Sarah Garven holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama, an MBA from the University of Tennessee, and a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University. Prior to joining Middle Tennessee State University, she served on the faculty at Ohio University and Morehead State University. She is an active Certified Public Accountant (Ohio) and has auditing experience in both Big 4 public accounting and industry.

Dr. Sarah Garven holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama, an MBA from the University of Tennessee, and a bachelor’s degree from Lipscomb University. Prior to joining Middle Tennessee State University, she served on the faculty at Ohio University and Morehead State University. She is an active Certified Public Accountant (Ohio) and has auditing experience in both Big 4 public accounting and industry.

Dr. Garven currently teaches Financial Reporting for Governmental and Not-for-Profit Entities, oversees the MAcc CPA Review Courses, and coordinates the Internal Audit Education Partnership (IAEP) Program at MTSU. She also serves as the accounting department's assurance of learning (AOL) coordinator. Her primary area of research focuses on the impact of corporate governance mechanisms, especially auditors, on the management of financial results in both the for-profit and nonprofit settings. She has articles published in journals such as Contemporary Accounting ReviewAuditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Accounting EducationNonprofit Management & Leadership, and the CPA Journal. She and her husband, Brian, have three children: Claire, Ethan, and Brooke.
