First Amendment News and Insights from MTSU

Florida Institute of Technology

Florida Tech held a Free Speech Week at its campus in Melbourne at its 1 for All project.

Leading up to the week of Feb. 17-21, 2020, was an essay and photography contest open to all students. The week itself featured lectures, events, and activities designed to help celebrate and foster a better understanding of the freedoms enshrined in the First Amendment.

For example, the staff of the campus newspaper, The Crimson, put up a free-speech wall where students, faculty, staff and visitors could express themselves by writing whatever they wished. Then came a speech contest, with students giving speeches on topics of interest to them. A photojournalism workshop followed.

At a "Live free or Eat Free" lunch, students experienced life without the First Amendment -- receiving a free pizza slice or sub sandwich if they agreed to give up their First Amendment rights.

Rounding out the week were a keynote speech, a panel of reporters discussing how they cover the space beat, and a slam poetry night.
