Outreach and Support

• In Fall 2012, MT One Stop and the Student Government Association (SGA) started a student food pantry for MTSU students who were unsure where their next meal was going to come from. Due to an increasing number of hungry college students, it was important to address this need on our campus. As the need continues. we hope that we are able to address the needs of our student body through the food pantry. MTSU joined the College and University Food Bank Alliance (CUFBA) in March 2017, which joins institutions with established food pantries or ones looking to start a food pantry. The items for our food pantry are stocked from food drives, individual and group donations, as well as monetary donations. The MTSU Student Food Pantry has grown tremendously over the years and with the increased growth and demand we have been able to serve students from a variety of circumstances and backgrounds.

• MTSU is dedicated to the financial wellness of our students as a part of our goal to, “...graduate students who are prepared to thrive professionally, committed to life-long learning, and actively engaged as citizens of their communities and the world.” As a community we aim to achieve this goal by “enhancing the quality of the student life experience,by addressing the financial health of students. As a community we hope to help you make informed financial decisions during your time at MTSU, but also to prepare you for life after college. In helping to prepare you we offer financial literacy presentations as well as on-campus events focused on your financial well-being. In addition to the presentations and events, we also offer a list of additional resources and financial basics to help you learn at your own pace.

• Established in 2008, MTSU along with the Department of Children Services, and the Tennessee Youth Advisory Council created the Next Step program. This program was created in part to assist in the transition of those aging out of foster care and transitioning into adulthood. However, these resources were also identified as areas of need for students experiencing or at-risk of homelessness and unaccompanied minors. It is believed that by giving these students the tools they need to succeed it would give them a better chance of succeeding in college and life after graduation. The Next Step program at MTSU aims to address the needs of this population by working to assist with their core needs as well as address the basics of navigating higher education at MTSU.

SGA Emergency Loan Program

The SGA Emergency Loan Program may provide small loans of $100 to both graduate and undergraduate students with an emergency need. The loans are short-term and must be repaid in 30 to 90 days. Students do NOT need to have filed a FAFSA form to be eligible for an SGA loan. However, the student will not be eligible for an SGA loan if they currently owe an MTSU balance. Student must be enrolled in six (6) credit hours during fall/spring semesters and/or enrolled in three (3) credit hours during the summer. Students may only receive one SGA loan per semester. International students are excluded from receiving an SGA Loan. Students seeking help should be referred to the MT One Stop. Funds are limited.

Emergency Short-Term Foundation Loans

The Emergency Short-Term Foundation Loan provides loans of up to $500 to undergraduate, graduate and international students. Students do NOT need to have filed a FAFSA form to be eligible for an Emergency Short-Term Foundation Loan. Applicants must provide a paycheck stub or show proof of ability to repay the loan. Graduate assistants and student workers may receive the loan against their monthly stipend or amount of their regular paycheck. Students may only receive one Emergency Short-Term Foundation Loan per semester. Students seeking help should be referred to the MT One Stop. Funds are limited.

MTSU Emergency Financial Assistance

Through the support of our community, MTSU has a dedicated pool of funds available to help students with emergency needs that may impact their ability to continue their education. These grants are designed to provide funding to help address verified need associated with a student’s education; as such they may be used to help provide funds for housing, food, transportation, books, etc. 

These funds are awarded as grants and do not have to be repaid. Grants are available up to an amount of $350 and are available to undergraduate, graduate and international students. Students may be awarded the grant only once in a semester unless otherwise stated based on funding source. 

To be eligible, students must be in academic good standing, with a minimum of a 2.0 overall cumulative GPA at the time of the request. Student must be classified as degree seeking and be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours. Students must also demonstrate satisfactory academic progress as determined by the MTSU Financial Aid office. Students currently on financial aid warning, probation or suspension are not eligible. Students receiving other forms of financial aid may not receive the grant if it will cause them to exceed their allowable Total Cost of Attendance calculation. A thank you note to the funding donor will also be required upon approval of grant.
