Discussion colloquium on “Economics and a Free People”

Undergraduate students are invited to apply to participate in a discussion colloquium on “Economics and a Free People” this fall at MTSU. Sponsored by the Institute for Humane Studies, this daylong colloquium for undergraduate students at MTSU will center on informal, yet serious, discussion with just 18 undergraduate participants. Professor Art Carden (Samford University) will serve as the discussion leader in order to facilitate an in-depth exploration of the questions and challenges raised by a set of readings (totaling around 150 pages), which we will provide you with and ask you to read carefully in advance. The readings will include a broad selection from contending classical texts in political economy, including Frédéric Bastiat, Friedrich A. Hayek, John Maynard Keynes, Friedrich List, Adam Smith, and Karl Marx.

The event will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at MTSU. Before you apply, please be sure that your schedule allows you to arrive in time for breakfast, and to be present through the concluding dinner Saturday night. Accepted applicants will be expected to attend the full program, including discussions, meals, and socials. As compensation for your participation, IHS will provide you a $100 stipend. Students should also include their participant in this selective event as a prestigious extra-curricular event listed on their resumes.

This event is being hosted by the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI). The PERI, housed jointly in the Jones College of Business and the University Honors College, has a mission to engage undergraduate and graduate students with faculty in research that will further our understanding of business and economic principles, as well as their impact on regional, national, and international financial conditions and the well-being of society.

Participants must be registered undergraduate students with an Honors Eligible GPA (minimum 3.25 GPA).
