The MTSU School of Journalism & Strategic Media is honored to host the 48th annual gathering of the AEJMC Southeast Colloquium, held March 2–4 , 2023.

Once you register for the conference, you'll receive a Google Form link. In this form, you can indicate dietary and transportation needs, what you plan to attend, and any comments or questions.

FULL -- Preconference: Dive Headfirst into R: API Data Extraction, Wrangling and Analysis

March 2nd
Due to high demand, 2 sessions: 1-2:30 p.m. or 3-4:30 p.m.
Limited to 20 seats per session
Included in registration.
Led by Dr. Ken Blake and Dr. Jun Zhang in the Social Media Insights Lab

Learn enough R to access an API, extract the data you want, analyze it, summarize the results in graphs, and export your captured data in comma-separated value format. No prior R experience is required, and you may either bring your own Mac or PC laptop or use one of the R-equipped Macs in our Social Media Insights Lab. Participants will leave with R scripts they can immediately begin using in their teaching and research. For an example, see:

Presentation Information

All rooms are smart classrooms, with projectors, computers, and laptop hook-ups. No poster sessions. 
High Density Sessions -- slightly shorter amount of time for presenting (details forthcoming). May do PowerPoint or handouts.

Great Ideas For Teaching Competition

The Great Ideas For Teaching competition has closed. Attend the G.I.F.T. session at the conference to get some great ideas in teaching! 

Submissions included:

  1. The title of the idea
  2. The class(es) where the idea could be used
  3. The idea/lesson
  4. Assessment/evaluation
  5. What makes this idea great?

Update: submissions have now closed for the SEC. Submit papers, proposals and G.I.F.T. entries by clicking this link or by emailing your submission to or Paper manuscripts should not contain identifying information.
In the subject heading, specify type of submission (paper, panel, or G.I.F.T. submission) and the group (divison/interest group or OPEN).
In the body of the email, list the following:

  • Author names & affiliation(s)
  • Status (student or faculty)
  • Designated group (Broadcast & Mobile Journalism, Community Journalism, History, Law & Policy, LGBTQ, Magazine Media, Newspaper & Online News, and Visual Communication, or Open Division). All of the participating divisions and interest groups allow for research-in-progress. The Open Division only accepts completed papers.
