This proposal will improve the student to computer ratio in one of the Recording Industry computer labs (MIDI Lab). The current setup of the lab requires that two students share one computer workstation during class time. This proposal will increase the number of workstations so that each student will have their own workstation during class. The technology budget includes MacPro computers, analog synthesizers, keyboard workstations, and a variety of software packages to replicate the current workstations in the lab. The effort to increase the student to computer ratio in the labs is part of the Recording Industry retention plan and will improve the quality of all courses that run in the lab. The proposal also includes some keyboard workstation and software upgrades for the current workstations. The MIDI lab is used by all students majoring in Recording Industry (1400 majors) and facilitates approximately 10 class sections each semester of the following courses: RIM 4190 Introduction to MIDI and Sound Synthesis, RIM 4290 MIDI Sequencing and Virtual Instruments, RIM 4590 Computer Based Scoring for Visual Media, MRAT 6030 MIDI and Musical Synthesis Seminar, as well as several electives. Several courses are also cross listed as MUTH courses to accommodate music majors who desire to study electronic music. The lab is open evenings and weekends for all Recording Industry majors to work on class projects.
