Build and equip a computer lab for upper division computer science classes. Some upper division computer science courses need to use software systems on dedicated computers. For example, operating systems (CSCI 325) students need to be able to modify the UNIX kernel. This cannot be done in an open lab since it will probably render the computer (temporarily) useless for ordinary applications. With increasing demands on the University lab complex in KOM 350-351-360, it is impractical to have any system out of service for any period of time. The proposed lab would ordinarily be used for 3-4 classes each semester and in summer sessions, for a total of over 300 students per year. This proposal is to remove the wall between KOM 303A and 303B, making one 11' x 20' room. This room would be provided with 12 workstations around the periphery. Tables and chairs would be needed to furnish the room. (The two rooms are currently being used as a research lab and as a microprocessor lab. The new lab can assume the research lab function. The microprocessor lab will be moved to another small space.)
