The University Studies Department offers four prescribed mathematics courses--Math 1710K, Math 1530K, Math 1010K, and Math 1000K. Approximately 3000 students each year are required to take these courses. Common threads for all of these courses are a learning outcome of using appropriate technology for mathematical reasoning and problem solving and using textbook-based computer courseware, which includes a required component of completing homework online. This request is for a laptop cart and laptops to be placed in KOM 159, one of the rooms used for these classes. Having these laptops in the classroom for student use would serve many purposes. Students would have the opportunity to work on their assigned homework and be able to practice immediately after listening to an instructor's discourse, with the instructor and their peers being able to assist them with any concept they find problematic. The ability to work on such assignments could potentially lead to greater success in the course and retention of these students. Additionally, these laptops could be used for course specific tasks, such as statistical analysis and graphing, accessing real-time data for exploring linearity and problem solving, using mathematical applets themselves instead of watching their instructor, and being able to view videos to assist with tasks in "inverted" classrooms. Equipping this one classroom would accommodate approximately 25% of the students in these courses. The construction estimate will include a new door with a card swipe for security, tables with electrical outlets, a Wi-Fi boost, and additional electricity to the class room.
