Bringing Writing Center Workshops to Peck Hall Classrooms In the past, the University Writing Center has developed workshops and mini-courses in grammar, punctuation, essay organization, language awareness, MLA and APA style sheets for academic writing, and computer skills for composition and research. Using a variety of technologies, the Assistant Director Kelly McKee has continued to refine these presentations, but student exposure has been limited. The computer lab connected to the Center is now so busy that we cannot in good conscience close it down for hour-long workshops. Because the presentations for classes meeting in BAS have been well received, we are confident that dynamic presentations in Peck Hall classrooms will benefit a much larger student population. With the aid of a Portable Master Classroom, the staff will be able to offer an efficient, focused presentation directed toward the particular composition problems facing any class meeting in Peck Hall: for example, English, History, Sociology, and Political Science. Our goal is to bring presentations to classes in every department in the building. Outreach will begin next semester and continue through the summer with particular attention to departments other than English. Tutor training will begin in the spring semester and will include a one-day session with a visiting composition expert sponsored by the Peck Fund. Our proposed project will benefit the tutors (graduate assistants in English) who will use the equipment, who will assist in the preparation of materials, and who will make many of the presentations. Most of our tutors will teach 2-4 semesters of Freshman Composition at MTSU before they complete the M.A. This project will better prepare the tutors to teach in a 21st Century classroom, providing a direct benefit for their MTSU students.
