The heart of modern chemistry, biochemistry, and forensic science courses are the accompanying laboratories. Because laboratory work is among the most interesting and enjoyable parts of these fields, it is important in our efforts in retention and recruitment. Also, many of our students are ultimately employed in research and industrial laboratories and therefore must be familiar with a wide variety of instrumentation. For our laboratory courses to remain relevant and adequately prepare our students for subsequent employment, these courses must be continually updated to incorporate emerging technologies. One area these courses absolutely must cover involves isolation, purification, and identification of a wide variety of compounds. The purpose of this proposal is to purchase equipment that will be used to develop new and interesting experiments, which ensure mastery of such techniques as mass spectrometry, protein purification and analysis, and various modes of chromatography. A large number of students will use this equipment directly including those students enrolled in CHEM 3530, CHEM 4530, CHEM 4230, CHEM 4190, CHEM 4550, CHEM 3880, and CHEM 4880 along with forensic science courses FSCH 3530 and FSCH 4231. Based on the enrollment in these classes the number of students expected to use these instruments is approximately 350 per year. In addition to the undergraduate students, graduate students working on their MS in chemistry and PhD in the Molecular Biosciences, and the Tennessee Center for Botanical Medicine Research will also be using this equipment.
