The Textiles, Merchandising, and Design (TXMD) Program within the Department of Human Sciences has the only Apparel Design program out of all public universities in Tennessee. The equipment used to train students in the apparel design field includes both sewing machines and computers with CAD software. The TXMD sewing machines are over 7 years old and are not equipped to handle the extensive use and increased program requirements for constructing garments and samples. We propose purchasing new sewing machines and cabinets to enable students to better meet the program requirements. In addition, TXMD currently has Gerber AccuMark Patternmaking, Grading, and Marker Making software. This apparel industry software generates garment patterns, sizing, and fabric markers that best utilize fabric while cutting down on fabric waste. However, we do not have a plotter on which to print full size patterns out for student use. We propose purchasing the plotter to enable the program to more accurately represent industry processes and teach students more effectively and efficiently. Currently students have to complete this process manually. The Pen and tablets will allow students to have greater control and improved accuracy when creating and manipulating patterns on the computer. Having the most up to date equipment will increase proficiency and will give students more extensive experience before entering the job market. It will also serve as a draw for potential students who are interested in the apparel design field.
