Complementing the University’s student success efforts; the Department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) proposes to implement a Supplemental Instruction (SI) facility in an effort to improve student retention among majors in addition to students enrolled in the HHP General Education course, and HHP service courses. This proposal is to equip AMG 205 as an SI facility where students and peer facilitators will be able to meet regularly to review course notes and materials, utilize course-specific technology, and analyze and discuss challenging discipline-specific concepts. This unique space will provide a location for academic assistance utilizing peer-assisted study sessions facilitated by high-performing upper classmen and graduate students as well as faculty. This space will also serve as an informal learning space for faculty to conduct impromptu or scheduled reviews and study sessions. This SI facility will be accessible to the 1,200 undergraduate majors (Athletic Training; Speech Language Pathology and Audiology; Exercise Science; Health; Leisure, Sport, and Tourism Studies; and Physical Education), 600 students per semester enrolled in the department’s general education course, and 1,000 students per semester in departmental service courses while simultaneously providing graduate students and faculty the opportunity to share their expertise and mentor undergraduate students in a unique environment. This multipurpose instructional space that can easily transition from a small review lecture venue to a small group or independent study location for up to 18 students at a time will meet the needs of the diverse academic programs in HHP.
