Replace high-performance computing cluster (Beowulf cluster); nodes are beginning to fail. The class serves students in CSCI 4330, 6330, 6430, 4900, and 5900 - between 50 and 100 students per year. Since almost all devices have multiple cores, students need to learn how to program in a parallel environment. The students cannot work on standard lab machines because they need multiple nodes and they need an isolated environment so as not to disrupt normal student/faculty use of the lab machines. In addition to classes, the cluster is used for research projects - mostly by COMS PhD students, but also by MS students and some undergraduates.
