Housing and Residential Life requests partial funding to support expansion of infrastructure to provide on-campus students with direct network access in campus residence halls. Convenient access to technology in student living areas is increasingly a baseline expectation that students are bringing to their selection of a college or university. Residence halls that provide for a "port per pillow" are critical to MTSU’s ability to attract and retain exceptional students. The Summer 2001 networking project is the second phase of a three-year plan to network all residence halls by Fall 2002. Cost of Phase One totaled approximately $360,000, completely borne by Housing and Residential Life. Phase One provided network access to approximately 1100 students living in the Monohan Complex, Lyon Complex, Smith, and Wood/Felder Halls. The cost of Phase Two is estimated at $570,400, and will provide access to 900 students living in Gracy, Cummings, Judd, and Womack Lane Apartments. We are requesting $100,000 to assist in defraying these costs. It is our understanding that recent revisions to TAF guidelines permit expenditures to support wiring, networking, and other infrastructure costs associated with providing students maximum computing capability. TAF funds may be used to offset up to 50% of total project fees.
