The two television studios in the John Bragg building for the College of Media and Entertainment provide a mission-critical function to students in this college. The intercom is a standard and critical part of producing multi-camera live TV productions. It allows production team members to communicate individually or collectively during the production. The two studios service approximately 450 students annually for approximately 20 classes of 20 students plus additional students producing programs for MT10, our student-run cable channel. Classes are for both the Department of Electronic Media Communication and the School of Journalism. Classes include required courses for both departments. These studios provide a critical part of our students’ hands-on learning experience. The current intercom system was installed in 1992. It has outlived its life expectancy through careful stewardship and frequent repairs and maintenance. Parts of the system are no longer functional. Some of the replacement parts are no longer available. If and when the intercom system goes down, the two studios will become inoperable and classes will halt.
