The Department of Recording Industry serves more than 1100 students and is a signature program for the University. In order to offer real-world experience in recording, editing and mixing, R.I. maintains six large-format recording studios (A, B, C, D, E and F) and six multi-user labs (Electronic Music, Digital Audio, Audio Post, Edit, Mixing and Mastering) located across campus.
Two of these studios, Studio C in the James Union Building 120 and Audio Post in Bragg 183, are in need of acoustic and electronic renovations to keep up with recent developments in audio production technologies. In addition, the physical space in Studio C is in immediate need of significant aesthetic improvements to the materials, acoustical treatments, and lighting to remain a vital resource for research, teaching and applied coursework.
This proposal addresses these issues by: (1) replacing the outdated control surfaces in the Post Lab and Studio C, both of which are beyond repair, with state of the art mixing surfaces. In addition, this will improve (2) stereo audio monitoring in Studio C, bringing it up to the same world-class standards currently in place in Studios A, B, D and E. And finally, this proposal will (3) improve the room appearance and functionality of Studio C, making it a showplace for the Audio Production program and bringing the studio up to the anesthetic and musical standards of our other rooms.
