This proposal describes necessary upgrades to the College of Media and Entertainment’s broadcast audio and video systems used for discipline-specific instruction and activities including public broadcasting, live studio events and remote production. Current weaknesses like old or faulty equipment and the lack of software-defined networking, remote-controlled shared input/output resources and long-distance digital media transport capability put student crews at a competitive disadvantage in their professional training, and they limit the College’s ability to engage in complex event production. If approved, these upgrades enable Media Arts, Recording Industry and the School of Journalism to operate the Mobile Production Lab (MPL), TV Studio 1, RIM’s Broadcast Control Lab and TV Studio 2 in parallel or independently while sharing I/O resources and mix functions, enhancing the efficiency of studio use and permitting activities to occur simultaneously, aiding in course scheduling and experiential opportunities for students. These improvements will also boost the quality and technical currency of live media production activities at events such as student coverage of Bonnaroo, campus-wide music concerts, news and public affairs coverage, athletics broadcasts, cross-production with WMOT and WMTS Radio, and other public content. Overall, this proposal will impact all Audio Production majors and Recording Arts M.F.A. students, Audio Production minors, Media Arts Video and Film Production majors, students in the School of Journalism and Strategic Media and the student employees of MT Productions, and others. The impact will extend to audio, video and broadcast journalism courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, benefiting close to 1,000 students annually.
