The Department of Art and Design, with the largest number of majors of any department in the College of Liberal Arts (376), is in need of additional equipment in order to continue offering instruction in industry relevant tools and technology. Existing equipment is no longer functioning, or has become obsolete. Replacing these items will ensure that our students have uninterrupted access to materials they need to successfully complete class projects in a timely fashion. The acquisition of new equipment is also needed in order to be more in line with studio standards of peer institutions, thus aiding in recruitment efforts. A mixer-mill and accompanying parts are needed to make sample preparation more efficient in the forensic anthropology isotope research lab. A stationary fume hood and chemical storage cabinet are needed to ensure laboratory safety and to bring the laboratory up to nationally accepted standards. The isotope research prep lab equipment will be used to facilitate student research and training, enhancing our students graduate school and employment prospects. The School of Music, leading all the CLA departments in retention rate (90.8%), is in need of new bassoons and oboes for the proper training of its music education students in their methods classes, which prepare our students to teach beginning students on those instruments. The Band of Blue, in which over 350 students participate annually, is in need of new alto and tenor saxophones. Its current saxophone inventory consists of several which range in age from 47 to 51 years and are barely playable, despite repeated repairs. The large ensembles in the School of Music request an electronic keyboard which will mimic the sounds of antique keyboard instruments, such as the celeste and harpsichord, whose unique tonal qualities are required in numerous large ensemble works.
