1. Electrical power and machinery (ENGR 4520) is a required course of Mechatronics Engineering and is offered both in the fall and spring semesters. The course covers some very important topics in Mechatronics Engineering, such as understanding the structure and principle of single-phase and three-phase power generation from generator and consumption in motors.Currently we have four Power Trainers and with an average of about 30 undergraduate students per semester that results in six to seven students huddled around one trainer. The acquisition of an additional Power Trainer will better serve the students by making the lab groups smaller and more hands-on. This is a critical piece of equipment that is required for Electrical power and machinery and senior design which will affect 100+ students annually at MTSU. 2. Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) class ENGR 4610 is a required course for Mechatronics Engineering and is offered in fall as well as spring semester with average of 56 students enrolled in one year. We are requesting funds to purchase Festo's new 4 station MPS line. These are all D series stations, with more current Siemens PLC's (S1512). This equipment will immensely improve student's hands-on experiences on PLCs as these are current state of the art equipment available and will train our students on latest technology. This funding will also give us the ability to increase class size to 16 from 11 which would help more students that are having to wait in line to enroll in this required major course.
