The department of Health and Human Performance (HHP) has 1,200 undergraduate majors, 50 MS students, and 37 Ph.D. students. HHP is the second largest department on campus based on undergraduate majors. The department is housed in two buildings, Alumni Memorial Gym and Murphy Center (MC), with a total of 11 classrooms (all unrestricted). HHP has one large classroom MC 104 which seats 92 students. Two courses HLTH 1530 (GenEd) and the EXSC 3000 (Introduction Course) mandate that HHP have a large classroom. MC 104 was constructed in 2006 with TAF funding. Budget constraints due to construction costs prevented setting the room up with two projectors so that all students would have an unobstructed and reasonable view of the single screen (27 seats in the room are >30’ from the single screen and over 300 square feet are wasted due to the diagonal setup of tables & chairs in the room). This proposal is requesting funding to update the technology and reconfigure the room to improve visibility of projected images and limit the distance of students from the projection screens. Moving to a two projector two screen system will remove obstructions, reduce student distance to screen, and add an additional 10 seats to the room. Additionally, a floating wall and second teaching station are requested so that when the large room is not needed the space can be split into two smaller rooms (48 & 40 seats respectively).
