The School of Journalism and Strategic Media (SoJSM) requests $62,700 for a new creative space master classroom primarily for Public Relations and Advertising classes. We propose to enclose a common space at the end of the second-floor hallway on the east end of the BRAGG building, transforming it into a student agency and media creation classroom. There is an identical common space at the other end of the building that will remain open. SoJSM needs to launch a student public relations and advertising agency as the next step in our already hands-on coursework, allowing students to experience working with non-profit and for-profit clients in an agency setting. This classroom space is critical to the agency implementation plan and will also be available as classroom space for the 2,094 students in the College of Media & Entertainment. With a reaccreditation visit in January 2024, it would be a sign of university support to identify in the self-study the addition of this lab and launch of the student agency. SoJSM has had limited benefit from recent TAF funding. Our last significant project was the 2016 conversion of Bragg 150 to a computer lab. After that our projects have been modest—a replacement video projector in Bragg 228 and a video switcher in the small TV studio. We have the full support of CME Dean Beverly Keel and the other department chairs (John Merchant and Marie Barnas). We met with Terri Carlton and James Copeland to get the estimated costs (below).
