This proposal requests funding to purchase eye-tracking devices in the College of Education, which is the #1 producer of teachers in the middle Tennessee area. There is continuing demand for educators and educational researchers to have objective and accurate insights about K-12 students’ learning processes. The requested discipline specific equipment will allow our college to train undergraduate and graduate students as future educators as well as researchers while being used in different undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs. In addition, potential collaboration can be made with Library Science, Psychology, and Dyslexia Center for interdisciplinary work. The eye trackers requested include both screen-based and glass-type eye-tracking systems with necessary software licenses to manage and export eye movement data. Eye-tracking has been widely used in many education sub-fields, bringing novel insights and great examples to students as they learn. Eye-tracking insights will also allow us to understand differences in attention to text while reading and interacting with visualizations, and help design the most effective strategy interventions. Additionally, the wearable glass-type eye-tracker will allow observing teacher’s attention allocation in classroom settings, providing our students with useful modeling examples. In sum, requested devices are to educate/train students in the following areas: (1) Reading and Literacy; (2) Mathematics and Science Education; (3) Special Education, (4) Curriculum and Instruction, and (5) Assessment. Enrollment/usage per academic year impacted by this request: 400+ undergraduate students and 500+ graduate students. It will finally have significant impacts on K-12 students in Tennessee. Additionally affected are directed graduate research, theses and dissertations.
