High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the primary factor influencing patient survival post-cardiac arrest. One in eight college campuses in the United States will have a documented case of cardiac arrest per year. Laerdal is a competency-based CPR program that is learner-driven and designates American Heart Association (AHA) certifications that are valid for two-years. Trainees will complete an online curriculum autonomously and subsequently perform skills competency at designed simulation stations provided on campus by RQI. All students in the physician assistant (PA) studies program must be AHA certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/Advanced Life Support (ALS)/Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) before entering the clinical year. RQI is learner guided and will ultimately decrease the faculty workload within the PA program. This product is data-driven, and evidence has shown its competency-based learning platform is superior to traditional certification methods. The RQI program is utilized by medical leaders such as Johns Hopkins, St. Jude, Emory, and Cleveland Clinic. Therefore, universities have begun to adopt the RQI curriculum and skills system. This funding would allow MTSU the distinction of being the first university in the state of Tennessee and the first PA program in the country to implement the RQI product. The PA program intends to make BLS/CPR training accessible to MTSU students within the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences. This availability and self-guided learning will encourage students to seek certification without time or financial constraints. With BLS/CPR certification more accessible through RQI the MTSU campus will be safer for all individuals.
