BRAGG building, room 123, serves as the news studio for the School of Journalism & Strategic Media students. Its camera systems were last updated in 2011. The image quality has degraded significantly and some of the equipment has broken and is no longer usable. We propose updating the robotic cameras and camera systems, replacing the equipment to better match that of the industry. Numerous Journalism classes use the equipment in the news studio and adjacent control room: JOUR 2132 Video Journalism Practices (required), JOUR 3640 Entertainment & Lifestyle Reporting (required), JOUR 3500 Video Editing & Reporting, JOUR 3570 Broadcast Announcing & Performance, JOUR 3720 News Producing, and JOUR 3640 Entertainment & Lifestyle Storytelling (required). This equipment is used to produce livestreaming news broadcasts twice per week for Middle Tennessee News, weekly video podcasts and several regular programs for MTN Sports. Students across the College of Media Entertainment use the equipment for practicum credit. More than 20 student volunteers work on news and sports shows, drawing from SoJSM, Media Arts and Recording Industry. Robotic cameras and other equipment are regularly used for award-winning study abroad shows, election specials, and sporting events. Faculty have used this equipment for research and creative projects. This equipment will be used in the new course "Media Training," open to all MTSU students and for other new classes in Journalism/Sports Media concentrations. Replacing the robotic cameras and other news studio equipment is critical for preparing students to be competitive in the job market.
