Replacement of Existing Technology

Purchase of the licensed type libraries brings the Journalism and Radio/TV-Photography production labs into lawful compliance and minimizes future problems related to using type software from multiple vendors. Currently, fonts in the lab are a mishmash of typefaces acquired through various sources through purchases of related software for applications or operating systems. Many fonts are installed via pirated or unofficial means. This use is unlawful, a symptom of system crashes and produces inconsistent output for printing and digitial files.

This proposal is for the purchase of software type libraries for the Media Design and Ad/Pr labs in the School of Journalism and the Photojournalism/Mutlimedia labs in Radio/TV-Photo Department.. The software will be used by students to learn about use of type in the design process and the functional message of the type form. The libraries provide substantial resources to access fonts for creating formats for print, Web or multimedia environments for both the PC and Macintosh. It also will provide a consistent set of fonts for students and faculty to use in their designs. The software will be placed in the labs and teaching stations used for instruction for undergraduate and graduate students taking GRAF 301, 358, 391, 395, 400, 401, 418, 490; JOUR 309, 345, 353, 480; ADV 348, 416, 417; PR 336, 338 374; PHOT 320, 358, 406 and 422. The labs also are open to other students in the College of Mass Communication during open lab hours, usually 20-30 additional hours per week. Number of students affected annually by the proposal: 1,000 based on students accessing the lab for media–related courses in the College of Mass Communication.
