We request funding to redesign COE 146 as a state-of-the-art classroom for synchronous-flex instruction and to add complementary advanced AI camera technology in COE 142 to support expanded synchronous-flex delivery across the College of Education. The College of Education is one of the top producers of teachers in Tennessee and currently serves over 1,100 students, more than 50% of whom are graduate and non-traditional students. Synchronous-flex instruction allows students to participate either in person or remotely, increasing flexibility for current students and expanding access to students beyond Middle Tennessee. This 20-seat classroom will impact over 100 students each semester. Multiple programs (e.g., Literacy Studies Ph.D., Early Childhood) will begin offering synchronous-flex courses in Fall 2026, and at least two fully equipped classrooms are needed to meet scheduling and instructional demands. High-quality synchronous-flex instruction requires intentional space design that supports seamless interaction among in-person students, remote students, and faculty. In consultation with James Copeland and Dustin Cunningham, COE 146 will be equipped with advanced AI tracking cameras, multiple large displays, and integrated audio-visual systems aligned with best practices. To ensure consistency across synchronous-flex classrooms, we also propose adding the same AI camera system to COE 142. Construction needs for COE 146 (e.g., electrical upgrades, acoustic panels, furniture) were identified in consultation with Kelly Reaves. This investment will expand enrollment capacity and ensure high-quality synchronous-flex learning experiences for our students. Thank you for your consideration.
