As technology rapidly reshapes how people learn, create, and connect, libraries are uniquely positioned to ensure equitable access to the tools and skills needed to thrive in a digital world. Establishing an Emerging Technology Workspace within our existing MakerSpace will expand the library’s role as a catalyst for innovation, supporting hands-on exploration, interdisciplinary collaboration, and technology education. The MakerSpace currently operates as an open-concept, high-activity environment. While this layout is ideal for individual fabrication, it can present barriers to collaborative, experiential learning. Specifically, ambient machinery noise and the lack of a dedicated instructional zone with sufficient seating hamper the effective use of audiovisual technology and make hands-on learning more difficult. This proposal seeks funding to establish an enclosed Emerging Technology Workspace designed to accommodate 24–30 students and support high-impact, technology-enhanced learning. Enclosing the area provides essential acoustic isolation for the Interactive Display, ensuring clear instruction and collaborative engagement, while also protecting 16 high-performance laptops from the dust and debris inherent to an active MakerSpace environment. By integrating dedicated electrical and data infrastructure, this project transforms previously underutilized floor space into a fully equipped, high-tech “smart” environment that supports seamless workshops, specialized software training, and technology-integrated lectures for cohorts of up to 24-30 participants. With strategic investment, the Emerging Technology Workspace will become a vital hub for hands-on flexible learning—expanding access to advanced tools, strengthening digital literacy, and building MTSU’s students' capacity for innovation and creative problem solving.
