The UAS Lab in BAS S112, a former Air Traffic Control Lab, is a key instructional space for the UAS Operations and UAS Technology concentrations. It provides lectures, hands-on training in UAS hardware, software, simulation, and operations for approximately 55 undergraduate students per semester. The lab also hosts external training for industry clients, regional and foreign dignitaries, and prospective student tours, highlighting MTSU's advanced technology to support recruitment and partnerships. BAS S112 does not meet MTSU Smart Classroom standards due to budget limitations during relocation. The raised floor has repaired holes, but irregular carpet shapes and gaps from prior ATC equipment creates an unprofessional appearance for students and visitors. The instructor station uses an ad-hoc raised table and wall-mounted TV, while student workstations lack proper under-floor AC power routing and cable management, resulting in hazards and clutter. Critically, the room has no streaming or recording capabilities for lab lectures and demonstrations, limiting accessibility, review, and hybrid/remote options for UAS courses. Upgrading to a full Smart Classroom would integrate streaming/recording aligned with MTSU standards, enhance instructional flexibility, and enable university-wide scheduling for non-UAS courses, maximizing resource use. This proposal requests $38,579.19 for technology setup/enhancements, $13,546.54 for related tech, and $47,874.27 for construction. Funding will support complete carpet replacement and floor repairs, proper under-floor power/cable routing, an upgraded Smart instructor station, and streaming/recording capabilities. The project will deliver a safe, professional, modern lab aligned with MTSU priorities, advancing student success in the growing UAS field, program expansion, and broader institutional benefits.
