The requested equipment purchases will significantly enhance our instrumental music program across multiple areas of instruction and performance. These acquisitions will directly support methods courses (MUED 1310, MUED 1320, MUED 1330, MUED 1410), private lessons (selected MUAP courses), and large and chamber performing ensembles (selected MUEN courses). It is essential for the School of Music to have quality instruments for students to use during their course of study. Lack of instruments in each area, specifically double reeds, low brass and percussion can have a negative effect on recruiting and performances beyond campus, as well as the educational experience. Through this funding, our large ensembles, Wind Ensemble (MUEN 3120), Orchestra (MUEN 3300), Symphonic Band (MUEN 3110), Concert Band (MUEN 3140), and Jazz ensembles (MUEN 3400) will gain essential performance equipment. The Adams marimba addresses critical wear-and-tear issues from moving practice room instruments to rehearsal spaces, providing a dedicated five-octave concert marimba. The Pearl drum set will be strategically placed in the IRH, allowing the current set to move to better serve jazz combos, salsa band, and percussion ensembles. The symphonic chimes replace mechanically-deficient chimes and the crash cymbals provide essential tone color for orchestral performances. Two double bass instruments strengthen our string section for orchestras and opera, but also provides ample instruction in low strings for methods courses. Supporting equipment is essential so ensembles can perform throughout the community, including baritone saxophone cases, mouthpieces for jazz and classical styles, and a bass combo amp for jazz combos.
