The Department of Geosciences requests funding to purchase EM River 3 stream table to strengthen hands-on instruction in geomorphology, sediment transport, and watershed processes related classes across CBAS. This stream table is especially valuable in high-enrollment True Blue Core courses, where students first encounter environmental and geologic sciences and considering a major. Hence, in addition to supporting lab activities, the stream table will serve as a highly visible tool for class demonstrations and outreach, strengthening recruitment and retention from TBC courses into CBAS majors. With a camera setup, the stream table can also support online TBC classes, benefiting remote students. Students will observe and measure erosion, deposition, channel migration, flooding, delta formation, and wave erosion while the color-coded media helps them track particle transport pathways and visualize sediment sorting over time. The stream table also allows simulation of extreme weather impacts by rapidly changing flow conditions, helping students explore how flooding and hurricanes (e.g., Hurricane Helene) reshape channels and mobilize sediment – an important topic for Tennessee communities facing increasing rainfall intensity and flood hazards. The stream table will directly benefit approximately 1540 undergraduate students annually, based on projected enrollment in Introduction to Environmental Science (TBC); Physical Geography (TBC); Introduction to Earth Science (TBC); Physical Geology (TBC); Hydrogeology; Geomorphology; Environmental Geology; Sedimentation and Stratigraphy; Geochemistry of Earth Systems; Environment, Society, & Hazards; Oceanography; Field Methods in Geology; Climatology and Climate Change; Case Studies of Environmental Geosystems; Genesis of Soil Landscapes; Fundamentals of Soil Science; Soil Physical Properties.
