The Chemistry Department continues to serve a large and diverse student population across multiple majors and minors and requests laboratory equipment, software, and computers to support the continued delivery of required instructional laboratories and capstone coursework, collectively impacting about 740 students annually. CHEM 2031 (Quantitative Analysis) provide foundational laboratory training for students majoring CBAS disciplines. The 3000-level Organic Chemistry laboratory sequence (CHEM 3011 and CHEM 3021) represents a critical instructional bottleneck for many majors and minors. These courses are required to ensure timely progression toward degree completion in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, and Pre-Health programs and rely heavily on computational analysis, molecular visualization, and modern instrumental data processing. Senior and graduate courses, including physical chemistry, instrumental analysis, and forensic chemistry ensure students receive the advanced laboratory preparation necessary for professional employment, graduate study, and faculty-mentored undergraduate research. Modern laboratory instruction in physical chemistry and instrumental analysis depends on reliable computing for data acquisition, numerical analysis, molecular modeling, and visualization, with several experiments being fully computational. Many existing laboratory computers are beyond their effective instructional lifecycle and no longer provide reliable performance, resulting in instructional disruptions and increased IT security concerns. The requested instrumentation and software are also necessary to maintain accreditation standards set by the American Chemical Society and the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission. Collectively, these acquisitions ensure the continued delivery of high-quality laboratory instruction, support undergraduate research engagement, and promote timely graduation across multiple STEM and applied science programs at MTSU.
