Graphical and statistical analysis and presentation of data are key elements of publication of scientific information. Many scientific journals now require electronic submission of manuscripts in PDF format. Hence, students and faculty need ready access to software commonly used in the scientific community for creation and submission of figures, images and analyses used in theses, manuscripts, and posters. Flexible, powerful, user-friendly programs are expensive. As part of creating a student-centered learning environment for science students, I propose that the university purchase powerful, user-friendly graphing and statistical software that integrates with Microsoft Excel; Sigmaplot (http://www.spssscience.com/SigmaPlot/index.cfm) and Sigmastat (http://www.spssscience.com/SigmaStat/index.cfm). I additionally propose creation of an additional location for access to Adobe Publishing Collection, v. 12 for Windows on a computer already connected to a 2400 dpi scanner in WPS 305. This enables science faculty to meet students near offices and classes in the science buildings to guide them through creation of appropriate materials for manuscripts, posters, and theses. I also propose to upgrade new computers recently installed in WPS 305 & DSB 124 by adding CD writers. Many students find the cost of zip disks prohibitive, or do not have a zip drive at home. Impact: available to all MTSU students
