The two MTSU departments dedicated solely to the study of music--the School of Music and the Department of Recording Industry--have approximately 2,200 majors between them. As of now, however, we have only 14 listening stations in the Music Library, and The Center for Popular Music has only one (1) listening station. A total of 15 listening stations for the kinds of programs we have on this campus is inadequate in the extreme! Therefore, we are currently attempting to upgrade the Music Library services offered here at MTSU. That is why we are, with this request, attempting to expand the number of listening stations in the Music Library to the largest number that the current location, the Instructional Media Resources Center, can accommodate. We also have extremely old and outdated equipment: Turntables break all the time; amplifiers are old and inadequate (20 yrs old and more); we need an increased number of CD players to handle increased use; and our current headphones are not even stereo! Given the technical expectations of today's Music students and the even higher expectations of the Recording Industry majors, the current equipment is close to, if not unacceptable. By funding this proposal, you will be helping both departments, and indeed the University as a whole, continue to attempt to develop a Music Library adequate to our needs.
