We request $78,000 for a state-of-the-art astronomical viewing, recording and analysis capability for incorporation in our general studies (GS) astronomy lab. Items will be assembled and integrated into an outdoor astronomical laboratory, giving 600 (25 sections of 24)GS students/y hands-on involvement in astronomical activities utilizing the best imaging and spectroscopic equipment—setting MTSU apart in its GS science offerings. Students will collect and analyze captured images that rival textbook images. Capability will provide MTSU students an astronomical research venue in the Whole Earth Telescope Consortium involving astronomers from around the world. Publications from this work averages 1 -- 2 papers per year in top-tier, international journals. This will provide first-rate undergraduate research opportunities, distinguishing our graduates in their pursuit of admission to graduate programs in astronomy. This will deepen the quality of our new astronomy concentration and provide richer thesis topics for our physics majors. Numbers will approach 25/y. Finally, this will be the centerpiece of our monthly star parties where all students as well as the general public can enjoy the heavens in unprecedented quality. Our new observatory, when completed, will house the laboratory permanently We request $43,000 to upgrade/replace modern physics equipment associated with PHYS 3100, 3110 and 4950. All of our majors (~10/y) go through these courses. This introduces some new and replaces some old non-functioning (>30 y) apparatus.
