Upgrade KOM Basic and Applied Sciences open computer lab. We want to expand the remote access capabilities for this lab and to upgrade software. Remote access: This makes it possible for students to access lab software from their personal computers or from other campus computers (such as in the 24x7 lab). This cuts the number of hours that this lab complex needs to be open, reducing labor costs while improving access. The additional servers and related hardware support remote access. Because we are concentrating servers in one location, it is also important to provide backup and mass storage capabilities. The KVM switch allows multiple machines to share a keyboard and monitor. Software: Versions of the current software (Maple; Minitab; Scientific Notebook) are simply out-dated and not working well anymore. Geometer's Sketchpad software needs to be expanded to 3rd floor rooms. Software products in this lab complex are used by well over 3500 students per semester. Upgraded versions are necessary in order for students to receive full benefit of the instruction and learning opportunities. Floating licenses are specified where available. These are not restricted to particular workstations; only the number of simultaneous users is controlled. Note: We have a pending proposal (approved by the College of Basic and Applied Sciences) to combine two KOM labs (Computer Science and Mathematics) into one College of Basic and Applied Sciences open lab. This is a joint proposal for the combined lab. However, items that are specifically for mathematics are denoted (M). The servers will serve all areas no matter how they are designated, but will be physically located in the 3rd floor complex (CSCI area).
