We are requesting the installation of seven state-of-the art, virtual acoustic technologies practice rooms (V-Rooms) in SFA 302. These modular units are drop-in and self-contained, acoustically sealed, and relocatable. Hundreds of MTSU students take Applied Music for academic credit (MUAP courses), while hundreds more perform in ensembles (MUEN), ranging from bands, orchestras and choirs to chamber groups. Both sets of courses require hours of individual student practice per week. The McLean School's rapid growth has made it difficult for our students to find adequate practice room environments throughout the day. These rooms are available to all students, music majors and non-majors alike (music majors have increased by 20% and Music SCH by 43% since Spring 2004; 60% of music instruction is to non-majors). Virtual acoustical technology allows for the creation of nine different acoustical environments, which enables students to adapt their playing to different types of performance halls. We are requesting a variety of V-room sizes, to accommodate practice by individuals and small ensembles (as well as occasional studio instruction). Units would require construction and renovation work, which has been discussed with Watson Hannah.
