As the animal industry evolves into a more scientific and technological industry, a need exists for increased awareness of available technology and the ability to use the technology for diagnostics, genetic selection, and management. Real-time ultrasound has become a widely used technology in the animal industry. It can be used for trait measurement in animals for subsequent selection, pregnancy determination and monitoring, disease diagnoses, and evaluating structural properties of foods. Since the early 1990's, the majority of Animal Science programs in the U.S. have been using real-time ultrasound in instruction. Because of the versatility of an ultrasound machine, it may be used in many applications. The following are courses that would be using the ultrasound in classroom exercises: Elements of Animal Science Genetics of Domestic Livestock Domestic Animal Reproductive Physiology Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals Livestock Management Beef Cattle Production Swine Production Sheep Production Dairy Production Stable Management Horse Breeding Farm Management Animal Nutrition and Feeding Advanced Livestock Management Advanced Beef Production Food Quality Control Livestock Evaluation Companion Animals Meat Science and Technology This request is for a real-time ultrasound machine and associated items for conducting instructional activities in the animal and food sciences. There are approximately 235 Animal Science majors in the School of Agribusiness and Agriscience and each would actively use this technology each semester, with many using this equipment in more than one class or semester. Additionally, all non-animal science majors in the department take at least two courses in the Animal Sciences, thus furthering student use of this technology. With the addition of approximately 120 minors in Animal and Horse Science, a student population in excess of 350 per semester would be using this technology.
