Replace all of the remaining SmartSwitch 6000 network switches in classroom buildings with updated network equipment. Specifically, the classroom buildings and rooms where the equipment will be located are: KOM252, KOM 351, BAS Computer Lab IDF, BAS S318, and LRC MDF (serving the ITSC). The SmartSwitch 6000 is a "chassis" network switch that provides network connectivity in those distribution rooms that have many (over a hundred) connections. The technology is outdated, as most of these ports are 10 Mbps, whereas the campus standard for new connections for several years is 100 Mbps to the desktop. New equipment will allow for faster link speeds (100 Mbps) and more security options for preventing the spread of viruses, worms, and network denial of service attacks. Existing equipment is seven years old, has limits on throughput and security options, and has exceeded the manufacturer's "end of life". Updating this technology will allow for greater options for worm, virus, and denial of service containment as well as much better network speeds for the users. Note, the equipment specified is current as of 1/06 but due to the nature of the business part numbers and / or quantities may change. Proposal is based on 1440 ports.
