University Seminar (UNIV 1010) serves over 2300 first-year students providing an extended orientation to the university, its culture and expectations. One of the learning outcomes of this course is to expose freshmen to the use of technology and to engage them in using technology in information gathering, processing, and distribution. To do so, the course must ideally be taught in a Master Classroom. As part of the planned renovation, classrooms are being built in several residential buildings to support the living-learning programs. In both Smith and Monohan halls, there are newly renovated classroom spaces large enough for 30 students each (Monohan renovation will be completed Summer, 2007). While Housing and Residential Life uses these spaces in the evening for tutoring, presentations, and student meetings, during the day they are available for use as classrooms. By using these classrooms in 14 class meeting times during the week, 420 students could be served in each semester and ease the classroom space crunch. The Scheduling center has prioritized the use of these classrooms as primarily for UNIV 1010 or general education classes most likely to serve the students living in the hall. This is a joint proposal from Academic Enrichment and Student Affairs.
