The ETIS Department’s forte is student-centered learning. This takes place in many student projects from national and international design competitions to undergraduate applied research. The student projects include, solar vehicles, The Great Moonbuggy Race, Baja race, SAE Formula car, Lunar Robotics, Concrete Canoe, and Space Elevator, to name a few. ETIS student projects have raised local and national awareness of our students’ capabilities and achievements. Last year alone 92 students participated in student projects while twelve students were active in undergraduate research. The majority of the student projects and undergraduate research activities involve material fabrication, testing, and analysis. The current ETIS inventory of equipment to facilitate these activities is quite inadequate with the last major purchase occurring about twenty years ago. We propose to purchase laboratory tools and equipment to fulfill the basic needs of these student projects as well as the approximately 100 students who register for the Metals and Metallurgy course in this department annually. This proposal will also address the need for diagnostics and analysis facilities at the graduate student level. Our hard working students deserve modern equipment to enhance their applied learning focus. They bring great local and national visibility for MTSU and the entire student body.
